Florida Teen Fatally Shot, 4 Adults Injured in Northwest Miami-Dade Shooting
A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed Monday night by a stray bullet when two gunmen opened fire on a group of four men at an apartment complex in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
Police say that the two gunmen approached the group of men, who were aged 22, 23, 25 and 28, as they were sitting around a table in an open area of the complex around 9.30 p.m. The men then opened fire, using what police believe were high-powered rifles. One of the bullets struck the teen boy, although police do not believe that he was a target in the shooting.
"It appears as if this child, we can call him a child even though he's in his early teens, was standing around and was not a target," Miami-Dade Police Department Det. Alvaro Zabaleta said, according to The Associated Press. "Once again gun violence has struck one of our teenagers."
After the shooting, the suspects took off. Meanwhile, four of the victims were transported to a hospital by fire rescue crews, while a fifth victim was taken by friends.
The teenager was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after arriving. The conditions of the other victims have not been released. Investigators are still searching for a motive in the shooting.
"Once again, we have now a family that of course is hurt, is mourning the loss of their child," Det. Zabaleta said, reports NBC South Florida. "As a community, I think we owe it to them to be able to come together and give the information to the police department in order to find these individuals responsible."
The Miami-Dade School Board confirmed that the young victim was a freshman at Northwestern High School in Miami-Dade.
Following the shooting, Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho tweeted about the incident: "Once again a murderous bullet steals the life of a child in our community. The cowardly code of silence is tantamount to complicity. #Enough"
Police are asking anyone with information to call Miami Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
