The 2015 NBA Conference Finals will kick off today, but teams who failed to advance to playoffs will have another thing to look forward to in the hopes of improving their chances next season.

The 2015 NBA Draft Lottery will take place on Tuesday night in New York City, where the selection order for the 2015 Rookie Draft next month will be determined.

The lottery will determine what team will have the chance to secure the services of highly touted college basketball stars like Karl-Anthony Towns of Kentucky and Jahlil Okafor of Duke.

How the Lottery Works

Fourteen numbered balls will be placed inside the lottery machine and will be mixed for 20 seconds. The designated league official will draw four numbers, and the team who owns the combination will pick first in the upcoming draft.

The same procedure will be done to determine the team who will pick second and third. Picks No. 1 to 14 will be determined based on the records of teams who failed to crack into the top three.

Who Has the Best Chance to Win the Lottery?

The Minnesota Timberwolves have 250 of the 1,001 possible combinations after finishing with the worst record during the regular season at 16-66. The New York Knicks have 199 combinations, while the Philadelphia 76ers have 156 combinations. Below is the complete number of combinations for each lottery team.

  • Minnesota Timberwolves - 250
  • New York Knicks - 199
  • Philadelphia 76ers - 156
  • Los Angeles Lakers - 119
  • Orlando Magic - 88
  • Sacramento Kings - 63
  • Denver Nuggets - 43
  • Detroit Pistons - 28
  • Charlotte Hornets - 17
  • Miami Heat - 11
  • Indiana Pacers- 8
  • Utah Jazz - 7
  • Phoenix Suns - 6
  • Oklahoma City Thunder - 5

The Lakers are hoping that they will move up into the top three or stay at fourth or fifth to keep their pick. If they fall out of the top five, they will have to surrender their pick to the 76ers, who will then have two high first-round picks in the upcoming draft.

The Cleveland Cavaliers won the lottery last year despite having just 17 combinations and drafted Andrew Wiggins before trading him to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the deal for Kevin Love. The Bulls also had 17 combinations when they won the lottery in 2008, which they used to pick Derrick Rose.
