"Degrassi" will not be coming to an end. In 2016, the show will get a Season 15, titled "Degrassi: New Class," and it will move to Netflix in the United States, according to Variety.
This summer will mark the final season for "Degrassi" on TeenNick, but it will continue airing on the Canadian network, Family Channel.
TeenNick has planned a special event for the series on its finale week, airing an hour-long special on July 20, followed by a daily new episode each day and concluding on July 31. The show debuted on the network in 2001 and, after 14 seasons, it will be leaving the cable network.
"Degrassi: The Next Generation" has tackled so many different issues facing teens in its 350 episodes since the beginning of its run in 2001. The "Degrassi" franchise actually dates back to the early '80s on Canadian TV as an after school special and morphed into other series' that caught on well with teens of all generations in the past 30 years.
Netflix announced the show's move over to their streaming platform on Twitter this morning.
"Degrassi graduates to Netflix. Meet the Next Class, coming in 2016," the Twitter statement read.
Variety reports the new episodes on the streaming platform will be called "Degrassi: Next Class" and will feature themes that have always been inherent to the series: teen issues and struggles.
This new show will address the issues "Generation Z" have to face as teens, such as homophobia, racism, substance abuse, violence, sexuality, body issues and more. These issues are wide-ranging and the show will carry on much in the same way its predecessors did, just with a new class that is on the brink of adulthood. This also includes dating issues in the digital age of social media, which is where virtual bullying may be a theme.
"For more than three decades, this groundbreaking show has been reaching teens with important stories and starting in 2016 our members around the world will be able to enjoy and discover the newest chapter of this great show," said Erik Barmack, Netflix VP of global content, in an emailed statement to Variety.
