NBA Finals: Have Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love Injuries Been Blessing in Disguise for Cleveland Cavaliers?
The Cleveland Cavaliers are just two wins away from ending the infamous 1964 professional championship drought in their city. The Cavaliers currently lead the Warriors 2-1 in the 2015 NBA Finals.
That's not extremely surprising considering the fact that the Cavaliers are a great team, and they have the best basketball player on the planet in LeBron James. What is surprising is that the Cavaliers are playing great and performing even better without their starters.
Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love are both out with injuries for the Cavaliers. Love injured his shoulder against the Boston Celtics in the first round while Irving injured his knee in Game 1 of the finals. Irving also missed two games in the Eastern Conference Finals against the No. 1 seed Atlanta Hawks. The Cavaliers won both of those games.
The Cavaliers are 4-0 this postseason without Irving and Love.
No Irving and Love, no problem?
Apparently so. The emergence of Matthew Dellavedova and Tristan Thompson has been amazing during this postseason. Thompson has been a monster on the glass grabbing numerous offensive rebounds for the Cavaliers. Thompson won't be mistaken for Hakeem Olajuwon or Karl Malone scoring wise, but his rebounding and hustle has been elite. Love can certainly hit perimeter shots, but that's not the primary job of a power forward.
This brings us to an interesting financial situation. Love has one more year remaining on his contract, if he so chooses. Love can opt in and remain with the Cavaliers for $16.7 million, but he may get a max contract elsewhere, maybe from the Los Angeles Lakers or New York Knicks. Love leaving the Cavaliers would be a huge benefit because it would save a lot of salary cap space. James has said multiple times that he is a huge fan of Thompson and wants him to stay.
The Cavaliers are 10-2 without Love this postseason.
And then, there's Dellavedova, who has been playing incredible defense in this series. Dellavedova wasn't even drafted, but he is shutting down league MVP Stephen Curry. Irving obviously won't be returning because of knee surgery, and Dellavedova appears to be a better option regardless of the Game 1 overtime injury.
Curry is a terrible matchup for Irving. It's not that Irving can't play defense, it's just we must remember that he was battling an ankle injury which forced him to miss two games in the conference finals. As previously stated, the Cavaliers won both of those games without Irving on the floor. Irving has excellent dribbling skills, but is a very below average passer for a starting point guard.
James led the cavaliers in assists per game this season with 7.4. Irving averaged just 5.2 assists per game, despite being the starting point guard.
Not having a hobbling Irving on the court has been a blessing in disguise for the Cavaliers because it allows James to operate the offense and dribble the ball up the court. James is a better ball distributor than Irving, and Dellavedova plays better defense than him. Nobody wants to see injuries occur, but the Cavaliers have to receive more credit for their roster depth.
