USA and China will meet in the quarterfinals of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup on Friday night at the Lansdowne Stadium in Ottawa, Canada.

The upcoming quarterfinal match will bring back the memories of their exciting duel in the finals of the 1999 Women's World Cup, where USA escaped with a 5-4 win on penalties.

And in the new chapter of their head-to-head matchup, USA are considered favorites heading into the match based on how they are playing in the tournament so far. They booked a spot in the quarterfinals by running away with a 2-0 win against Colombia in their Round-of-16 match on Monday at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.

However, the American side will face bigger challenges on Friday night as they will be playing without starting midfielders Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday. Both midfielders were suspended for the match after getting their second yellow cards of the tournament during their match against Colombia.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Rapinoe and Holiday have created a combined 18 scoring chances in their first four games of the tournament, while the rest of their teammates created 19 chances. Losing Rapinoe and Holiday is a big blow to USA, but head coach Jill Ellis believes her available players are ready for the challenge.

"These are players that love challenges," Ellis said in a news conference via ESPN. "The coaches in here have high expectations, but it's about getting them to that point. We're capable of a lot more, and that's the expectation on ourselves."

Without her midfielders, recent reports also indicated that Ellis might decide to switch to 4-3-3 formation instead of their usual 4-4-2, but the veteran manager refused to reveal her cards.

On the other hand, China are also expected to go all out in the hope of pulling off an upset. China manager Hao Wei said that their 1-0 win against Cameroon in the Round-of-16 eased the pressure on their shoulder because they have already reached their goal of advancing the quarterfinals, but that does not mean they will not go for the win.

"It's a game, we just need to do our best to try and win the game, it's the same for every match," said Hao, who added that their 1999 loss to USA won't be a factor. "In a game, anything can happen. What's past is past, we look forward to (Friday's) match and we will do our best."
