Hana Tajima for Uniqlo: Uniqlo to Debut Muslim Women Fashion Collection [Watch]
To the modern mainstream fashion world, the hijab is not about making a fashion statement, but, to the women who wear it, it is as much about expression as it is about religion. Designer Hana Tajima and Japanase fast-fashion retailer Uniqlo have teamed up to give these women both.
The fashion blogger and designer, who converted to Islam at the age of 17, was tapped by Uniqlo to create a clothing collection that would cater to the needs of Muslim women who do not want to sacrifice modesty for fashion.
"When it comes to buying clothes, on the one hand you have traditional styles that really target you as a 'Muslim woman of [insert regional heritage],'" Tajima told Mashable. "But for a lot of women, a singular and specific cultural identity isn't what they relate to... there is a lot of ingenuity and making do with what's available on the high-street, but you just don't find clothes that were made for you. A line of modest clothing was a way to reach a lot of people who are very often overlooked."
Tajima's "LifeWear" collection features statement pieces like maxi dresses and pleated skirts, as well as more traditional pieces like the hijabs, keyabas, wraps and tunics. Regardless of whether contemporary or traditional in style, all the pieces in the collection allow for colorful options and integration with other items women might already have in their wardrobe.
The goal of the collection, besides providing stylish pieces that maintain modesty, is to allow women versatility in their dress choices. Many of the pieces have layered looks that keep the amount of fabric actually being worn at a minimal.
Tajima explains, in a behind-the-scenes video, how this was possible because Uniqlo gave her "a lot of creative freedom and a lot of trust." The clothing collection debuts on July 3 at select stores in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
The brand announced their collection on their Singapore Instagram account.
