NBA Free Agents Rumors: New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks Eyeing Carlos Boozer?
The big-name free agents are already out of the market, but several teams are in a race to sign players who are still without a contract almost a month after free agency began.
According to Michael Scotto of Sheridan Hoops, veteran forward Carlos Boozer is getting strong interest from the New York Knicks, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks. Boozer is an unrestricted free agent after his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers expired this summer.
The Knicks are looking to add more bench depth despite shoring up their frontline earlier in the offseason. They selected Kristaps Porziņģis with their fourth pick in the 2015 NBA Draft and signed Robin Lopez to a four-year deal worth $54 million this offseason.
Aside from Lopez and Porziņģis, the Knicks also added Derrick Williams and Kyle O'Quinn, while also signing veteran guard Arron Afflalo to provide scoring help in the upcoming season. Adding Boozer would give them additional veteran presence in their bid to bounce back from a disappointing season.
On the other hand, the Rockets also need frontline help after losing Josh Smith, who moved to the Los Angeles Clippers. Terrence Jones is projected to start at power forward, but Boozer could get a shot if he decides to sign with the Rockets this offseason.
Like the Rockets, the Mavericks are also expected to add another frontline player, especially after losing in the race to acquire DeAndre Jordan. Jordan initially committed to the Mavericks, but eventually decided to return to the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this month.
Boozer spent last season with the Lakers after playing with the Chicago Bulls for four seasons. He was amnestied last summer and signed a one-year deal with the Lakers. In 71 regular-season games, Boozer averaged 11.8 points on 49.9 percent shooting from the field and 6.8 rebounds per game.
Cleveland Cavaliers Keep Matthew Dellavedova
In other free-agency news, the Cleveland Cavaliers resign Matthew Dellavedova to a one-year deal worth $1.2 million, ESPN reported on Monday.
According to the report, Dellavedova accepted the qualifying offer, which means he will become an unrestricted free agent next summer and could get a bigger deal because of the expected increase in salary cap.
Dellavedova made an impact for the Cavaliers during the 2015 NBA Finals, when starting point guard Kyrie Irving went down with a season-ending knee injury.
It remains to be seen how Dellavedova's role will be affected by the arrival of veteran point guard Mo Williams, who signed with the Cavaliers earlier this month.
