Manchester United Transfer News 2015-16: David De Gea in Limbo
Manchester United's goaltending situation is at a rather interesting crossroads.
For the longest time David De Gea looked like he was leaving the team and heading to Real Madrid. As a result Sergio Romero was brought on to presumably replace him.
Now it looks like De Gea might not be going anywhere. The keeper is being kept off of his team's roster for the Premier League debut, but his chances of moving elsewhere are also slim.
Some reports indicate that Real Madrid's interest in the Spanish keeper might have cooled. The reason? The strong displays from Kiko Casilla and Keylor Navas during preseason.
Last season, Madrid struggled watching Iker Casillas put on unpredictable performances. Navas was far from exemplary in the backup role, but rarely got a chance to showcase his talent and find a rhythm.
It seemed that a newer and better keeper was on order.
With both Navas and Casilla looking better, Madrid might no longer be interested in investing a ton of money in De Gea. The Spanish team might instead look to wait until next summer when De Gea's contract expires with United and he can be obtained for no additional cost.
This, of course, does not sit well with the Red Devils, who would like to avoid losing their 2014-15 MVP for nothing.
De Gea's value is as high as it will ever be and letting him walk next season is not a great strategy. Of course, other teams might be interested in buying him, but it is unlikely that any other side will be in the position to pay the money Madrid was likely willing to pay.
As for Romero, he has been a backup for years and would likely be familiar with sitting on the bench. De Gea might face harsh criticism from fans, but could easily win back their support with strong performances.
It will be an interesting matter to keep tabs on. De Gea could still head to Madrid if Sergio Ramos opts to leave as well, thus ending this saga once and for all.
