Will Smith was just an emerging rapper way back in 1990 when he got a successful breakthrough in the acting business as the "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." According to TV Line, that hit sitcom on NBC in the '90s has now emerged onto the reboot scene that is currently emerging in Hollywood, with franchises making comebacks in the broadcast and streaming television arena.

Although Smith will not be starring in the project, he will be highly involved in the production, serving behind the scenes as a producer and developer for a new take on the hit sitcom that made him an international star in both TV and film.

Smith was the headlining star of the original series, which ran for six seasons on NBC and wrapped up in 1996. The new series is expected to maintain the "fish out of water" theme and in some way play on the legacy that his character once had on the peacock network.

Although NBC is not directly involved in the project, Chairman Robert Greenblatt has expressed interest in being a part of the vetting process, saying he would "be happy to talk to Will [Smith] about it."

Reports have indicated the project is still in the infancy stages and that no details have been finalized on what the show is going to be about, nor who will be starring in it.

Smith is expected to serve as an executive producer alongside his partners at Overbrook Entertainment, which includes wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett.

The reboot is not expected to bring back old characters from the original series, but that doesn't mean it won't change. It is supposed to be a new spin on the original concept, which puts another young man from humble beginnings in a new environment of wealth and prestige.

The project and pitch is being shopped around at this time, and there has been no word on what network or streaming platform the new show may on.
