Frat Suspended for Hanging Sexually Suggestive Signs Targeting Freshmen Girls Near Old Dominion University
The Sigma Nu chapter at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, has been suspended after sexually suggestive banners were hung from an off-campus home where several of the fraternity's members reside.
The controversial banners sparked a firestorm of backlash after they were hung on the front porch of a private home last weekend just as newly admitted freshmen were arriving at the school. One of the signs said: "Rowdy And Fun! Hope your baby girl is ready for a good time." Another one read: "Freshman daughter drop off," and a third one stated: "Go ahead and drop off mom too."
Administrators and some students criticized the sexually suggestive posters for targeting incoming female freshmen. As a result, Sigma Nu's national organization announced on Monday that it has suspended the fraternity's activities at the college as school officials investigate the incident. The frat also released a statement condemning the banners.
"The Fraternity condemns the derogatory and demeaning language used on the banners," the fraternity's executive director Brad Beacham said in a statement, reports Fox News. "Such language has no place in our Fraternity or within any caring community, such as that of ODU."
Beacham also promised that any fraternity members responsible for the sign will face consequences.
"Any fraternity member found to be responsible for this reprehensible display will be held accountable by the fraternity," said Beacham, according to WVEC-TV.
The university also issued a statement about the banners, saying: "Messages like the ones displayed yesterday by a few students on the balcony of their private residence are not and will not be tolerated."
Meanwhile, Old Dominion President John Broderick aposted a message about the controversy on the university's Facebook page, expressing his "outrage."
"I am outraged about the offensive message directed toward women that was visible for a time on 43rd Street. Our students, campus community and alumni have been offended. While we constantly educate students, faculty and staff about sexual assault and sexual harassment, this incident confirms our collective efforts are still failing to register with some."
"I said at my State of the University address that there is zero tolerance on this campus for sexual assault and sexual harassment," Broderick wrote. "Any student found to have violated the code of conduct will be subject to disciplinary action."
Broderick added that at least one of his students "thought seriously about going back home" after seeing the "offensive message."
