Champions League 2015-16 Preview, Schedule: Predicting Winners Of Each Group
The Champions League draw is set. The schedule is also set in coming weeks. Which team is going through to the next round. Here is a group by group breakdown of what is to come.
Group A -Real Madrid, PSG, Shakhtar Donetsk, Malmo
This group is among the easier to predict. Real Madrid and PSG are the cream of the group and will likely battle for the top two spots. Shakhtar could cause some havoc, but the team has lost some key pieces this summer and is no longer as solid a contender as it was last season when it finished second place in a group with infinitely inferior competition. Malmo is along for the ride.
So who wins? Real Madrid is a better side than PSG, but not by a lot. At the end of the day, the Spaniards will finish first with the French side coming in at number two.
Group B - Manchester United, Wolfsburg, CSKA Moscow, PSV Eindhoven.
This group also comes down to two teams with Wolfsburg and Manchester United leading the charge. The English side is the favorite as the German team will likely be shorthanded in this competition once Kevin De Bruyne heads to Manchester City. The other two teams will do battle for third place.
Group C - Benfica, Atletico Madrid, Galatasaray, FK Astana
Benfica is a good squad, but Atletico is the runaway favorite. There really is no contest here for the Diego Simeone's team which boasts tremendous depth throughout. Galatasaray and Benfica will do battle for second with the Portuguese side slightly edging the Turkish team. Astana will be the group punching bag.
Group D - Manchester City, Sevilla, Juventus, Borussia Monchengladbach.
The Group of Death. For years Manchester City has languished in one hard group after another in this competition. This year was no difference. Actually the difference is that this City team is as good as it has ever been and should actually be considered a top side in this group. Look for Juventus, as retooled as it is to be the other contender in this group, though it would not be surprising to see Sevilla scrape through to the knockout stage.
Group E - Barcelona, Bayer Leverkusen, Roma, BATE Borisov.
The defending Champions got it easy and should win this group without breaking a sweat. Of course that is contingent on fatigue, but even with reserves, this team is miles better than the competition. Roma and Leverkusen battle for second with the German side managing the second spot. The big question of this group? Will BATE Borisov allow more than the 24 goals it did in 2014-15 when its group did not include any elite players on the level of Luis Suarez, Neymar or Lionel Messi?
Group F - Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Olympiakos, Dinamo Zagreb.
Poor Arsenal. In 2012-13 Bayern Munich knocked it out of the Champions League. In 2013-14, Munich did the same exact thing. The German side is unlikely to deal Arsenal the same fate in 2015-16, but it will likely put the team into second place in the group meaning that a matchup with Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid or Valencia is likely on the horizon. In which of those matchups would you favor Arsenal? Maybe Valencia and that is tough matchup. At least it will have the respite of beating up on Olympiakos (though that team is a tough out) and Zagreb (which should be a walk in the park).
Group G - Chelsea, Porto, Dynamo Kyiv, Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
The positive from this draw? No complaints from Jose Mourinho (he'll still find a way to hassle the referees of course).
The negative? Chelsea gets another easy route to the round of 16. Last year the team cruised on to the knockouts before getting kicked out by PSG. This year the path to the round of 16 looks to be even easier.
Iker Casillas should lead Porto as well as the Portuguese team is strong enough get through to round two.
Group H - Zenit, Lyon, Valencia, Gent.
The snooze fest of a group, no disrespect intended. None of these teams is a contender to win the trophy so the lucky two recipients to move on will not be enjoying a lengthy trip in Europe. Valencia stands to lead the way while Lyon should also have its way considering Russian teams' lack of success in this competition.
