NFL: Who Should Washington Start at Quarterback? [VOTE]
The Washington football team is a mess. They have no organization, no stability, and they're the worst team in the NFC East. Their fans know this, which is why they constantly protest owner Daniel Snyder at home games.
The latest dramatic news to hit Washington's fans head-on is the decision to bench Robert Griffin III for the season opener, according to ESPN. Kirk Cousins has been named the season opener by head coach Jay Gruden. This is an unpopular decision for some, but the correct choice for others.
While Griffin hasn't looked good (or healthy) this preseason, Cousins doesn't exactly resemble the next Joe Theismann. Cousins, a fourth round pick, has started nine games for Washington over the last three seasons. Unfortunately for him, Cousins is just 2-7 in those nine starts, including a 1-4 record last season. In his young career, Cousins has thrown 18 touchdowns and 19 interceptions with a pedestrian 59 completion percentage.
Cousins may have the support of the locker room, and more importantly the offensive line, but he hasn't performed well on the field at all. This is going to be a whole different scenario for Cousins because of timing and pressure. Cousins is used to coming in as a starter midway through the season, when the team is losing and Griffin is hurt. The pressure is on Cousins to perform at a high level now more than ever because he is the Week 1 starter, which he has never been before.
As for Griffin, he did have a fantastic 2012 season, winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. He's a mobile quarterback - sometimes to a fault - who has proven he can win this division. As a matter of fact, his 2012 division title is the only time Washington has won the NFC East in the 21st century.
On the flip side, Griffin brings a lot of baggage with him. He is constantly injured, he's being viewed as a coach killer, and his complaining isn't winning over any teammates. Griffin is 5-15 as Washington's starter over the last two seasons. However, Griffin has the biggest factor on his side: the support of owner Daniel Snyder. Snyder is a huge fan and believer in Griffin, and that will more than likely supersede anything Gruden wants. Just ask Mike Shanahan.
Snyder rewarded Griffin with a $16 million team option. If Griffin is on the roster to start next season, he will get all $16 million regardless of how well he plays. Rumors are swirling that Washington's coaches are looking to trade him, but no teams have shown serious interest, and Snyder won't approve such a deal.
The other quarterback to keep in mind is Colt McCoy. McCoy is in the final year of his contract. Last season McCoy got an impressive victory over the Dallas Cowboys, but that was his only win, as he finished the year 1-3. McCoy has previously played for the San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns. Washington could re-sign McCoy, given the fact that his future contract won't hurt towards the salary cap much at all, and he does know the system.
Unfortunately for Washington's fans, the light at the end of the tunnel appears to be a train. There's no solid No. 1 starter on the roster at the moment, and the controversy is neverending. The Philadelphia Eagles and Cowboys look immensely better on the field, while the New York Giants even hold a slight edge in the division. To have quarterback controversies at this time with the owner and head coach is just terrible, with the NFL season just weeks away.
