Big franchises have no qualms packing in a ton of characters in each movie but don't expect the same for "Guardians of the Galaxy 2."

The Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), who is beloved for charting his own offbeat path as a superhero, will not be welcoming too many new faces in the second installment of "Guardians of the Galaxy," according to director James Gunn during a recent Twitter Q&A.

When asked how many new characters will be introduced in the sequel, Gunn responded, "Not too many, that's for sure! I want all of our characters to get MORE personal time than they did in the first film."

He explained why the Hulk and Captain Marvel will not be making an appearance in a separate tweet, saying, "For the time being, it's important to me that Quill is the sole human (earthling) character."

Some fans will be disappointed that there won't be additional star power in the upcoming sequel of the Marvel hit, but the bright side is the beloved core characters will not get lost in the shuffle. Although the director is careful not to make the ensemble cast too crowded, he dropped some hints about an additional female joining the roster.

"As I've said many times it's one of my goals to get a higher % of female heroes (and villains) out there," he tweeted.

According to Cinema Blend, one possible new character that might be making the cast is Moondragon, who is part of the group in the comic books and should help usher in an interesting new storyline.

At the end of the first "Guardians of the Galaxy," Quill goes off with his crew to seek out his mysterious father, so it's safe to presume the sequel will — at least in part — touch on the origins of his paternal side.

Earlier this year, Gunn shared more about the sequel on the "Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend" podcast. According to Screen Rant, the director said that the film will not be reliant on the original stories of the comic books. Instead, the team is planning to pursue new plots and angles to the characters.

"The story for 'Guardians 2' is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting 'Guardians 1' and it'll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill's father and who he is and what's going on with that," he explained in the interview.

Gunn added, "It's different than what's in the comic books. Peter Quill's father is somebody different in the comics."

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" will hit theaters in May 2017.
