NFL Trade Rumors: Are the Washington Redskins Shopping Robert Griffin III?
The NFL trade deadline is still more than a month away, but with players going down with injuries every week, teams will try to improve their depleted lineup. As of week two, 15 percent of the league's players have been injured, as reported by Bleacher Report.
The Washington Redskins' third quarterback Robert Griffin III was one of the names mentioned on trade rumors at the start of the season, according to a previous report from Latin Post. NBC Sports noted that Coach Jay Gruden named Kirk Cousins as his starter and Colt McCoy as his backup early in the season due to RGIII being out due to concussion symptoms.
In an earlier report from ESPN, the Redskins' front office officials and coaches are ready to trade the 25-year-old quarterback but have not found any interested parties with the Redskins' ownership not giving their full blessing in trading the franchise's star. However, that option seems to be out of the window because according to CBS Sports, general manager Scot McCloughan will not trade the 2012 Rookie of the Year.
A source close to the current situation said, "Scot does not want to trade him. He really doesn't. That's not something he is even thinking about. He's still getting to learn about him and what he can do and what he's all about. This kid was the 2012 Rookie of the Year for a reason and you don't just fall into that stuff. He's not giving up hope on him."
A handful of quarterbacks are currently injured including Drew Brees, Geno Smith, Ben Roethlisberger, Jay Cutler, and Tony Romo, but CBS Sports reports that no team has inquired about the quarterback to know what Washington's asking price is or even engage in preliminary trade talks. Griffin's 2016 salary of $16 million is guaranteed for injury, which probably scared away possible suitors, given his long injury history. It is also said that it's only a matter of time that RGIII will take McCoy's spot in the roster, so the Redskins might as well hold onto him.
Another possible reason why the Redskins won't trade Griffin is that he has not created any tension in the locker room as opposed to an article from Bleacher Report, where he was reportedly having a riff with Cousins. He responded about the allegation via Twitter.
CBS Sports sources added that Cousins and Griffin are actually in great terms as they frequently talk to each other. The Redskins locker room is said to be in a good mood and without negativity for the first time in years. While he's not playing, RGIII has done some scout-team duties, cheering and smiling on the bench and has not said anything to the media about his morale or if he will demand a trade.
