Nicki Minaj Set to Produce, Star in TV Comedy
Nicki Minaj has signed on to executive produce and star in her own scripted comedy series on ABC Family.
After teasing her fans on Twitter and Instagram, telling them to watch out for an exciting announcement, the rapper finally re-tweeted an ABC Family tweet, which revealed the news with the popular hashtag #NickiSurprise.
The TV show, from Aaron Kaplan's Kapital Entertainment, will be based on the female rapper's life growing up in Queens, New York, according to Deadline. Filming for a pilot in Minaj's hometown is scheduled for this winter.
"Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches," ABC Family's executive vice president of Programming and Development Karey Burke said. "Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can't wait to share it with the world."
The series will recount Minaj's upbringing in Queens in the 1990s, her lively immigrant family and her aspirations as a young girl, which eventually led her to pursue a career in the music business.
Kaplan, writer Kate Angelo and Minaj will share executive producing duties, along with Stella Bulochnikov, Brian Sher and Gee Roberson.
"This is one of the more unique adventures I've ever embarked on," Minaj said. "I couldn't be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special."
Before launching her successful career in the music industry, Minaj aspired to be an actress. The rapper previously studied acting at Manhattan's LaGuardia High School. So far she's landed a voice role in the animated film "Ice Age: Continental Drift" and a co-starring role in the comedy "The Other Woman." Most recently she finished filming for her first starring movie role in "Barbershop 3."
Minaj has also appeared on "Saturday Night Live" in skits where she impersonated Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé.
Minaj is originally from Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago and moved to the U.S. as a child.
