Lindsey Vonn Confident of World Cup Chances, Focused After Split With Tiger Woods
Lindsey Vonn believes that she can regain her status as world's best female ski racer after her summer training went smoother than before.
Vonn was bothered by multitude of injuries, including major knee injuries, over the past three years, which hurt her chances in the World Cup and World Championships.
But now that she is free of injury, Vonn believes that she will have a good chance to win the overall title in World Cup. The four-time World Cup champion also pointed out that she is more focused after going through personal difficulties, following her breakup with golf superstar Tiger Woods.
"I've been through some personal difficulties, and it was a hard time, but in the end ultimately it gave me more opportunities to focus on myself and getting stronger, mentally and physically," Vonn told Denver Post. "I'm in a really good place right now. I'm 100 percent focused on my skiing and my career."
Vonn admitted that she is still having a hard time dealing with her split with Woods, but she insisted that it will not affect her focus in upcoming competitions.
"I don't think you really ever get over something like that," Vonn said. "It's been difficult, but also a time for personal growth for me. I feel pretty good right now."
The timing looks perfect for Vonn as well because the two biggest threats to her World Cup title bid will not ski this season. Tina Maze of Slovenia, who won the World Cup title in 2013, decided to take a year off, while back-to-back World Cup winner Anna Fenninger sustained a torn ACL and patellar tendon in her right knee while training on Wednesday in Austria.
Vonn does not expect an easy tournament, though, but she is confident that she has the advantage over her competitors because of her vast World Cup experience.
"I'm definitely motivated to try to get the overall title back," Vonn added. "It's a difficult title to win, I think the most difficult in ski racing, but I've done it a few times and I know what it takes. I think that experience gives me a pretty big advantage over my competitors, and I'm exceptionally motivated."
Vonn sustained a torn ACL in her right knee in 2013 while competing in the world championships. She planned to defend her title in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, but she reinjured her right knee. She also suffered an ankle injury earlier this year, but she said that she has fully recovered from the setback.
