Hollywood Film Awards 2015: Benicio del Toro Wins Best Supporting Actor for 'Sicario'
Benicio del Toro was honored with a Hollywood Film Award for his work on "Sicario."
Del Toro's work on the film has been hailed by critics and many pundits suspected he would be nominated for the Best Supporting Actor award. The Hollywood Film Awards have a tendency to try and become the first precursor awards and attempt to predict which actors will be nominated. The organization prides themselves in being the first awards ceremony of the year.
In the past, the organization has chosen a number of actors in the supporting category who eventually go on to get nominated for the Oscar. For example, last year the Hollywood Film Awards gave the award to Robert Duvall for "The Judge" and in 2012 the award went to Robert De Niro for "Silver Linings Playbook." In 2011 the awards show gave the eventual Oscar winner Christopher Plummer the award for "Beginners."
While the Hollywood Film Awards are more of a marketing campaign than an actual awards ceremony, celebrities attend to make audiences and critics aware of the movie and also to campaign for the Oscars. Del Toro has a good shot at the Academy Awards this year especially since his film has been a box office success and has also been hailed. by critics everywhere. Additionally, he is already an Oscar winner as he has won for "Traffic" and was nominated for "21 Grams."
Other winners at this year's Hollywood Film Awards included Will Smith for Best Actor for his role in "Concussion," Carey Mulligan Best Actress for her work on "Suffragette" and Jane Fonda won Best Supporting Actress for her work on "Youth." Tom Hooper won the Best Director award for "The Danish Girl" while Ridley Scott won the Producer award for "The Martian."
Del Toro was recently seen in "Inherent Vice," "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Escobar: Paradise Lost."
