Donald Trump may not be the only presidential hopeful worried about Ben Carson's recent surge in the polls as new survey reveals that the retired neurosurgeon would also give Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton a run for her money if the general election was currently held.

According to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, Clinton would be in a dead heat with Carson if voters had to choose between the two candidates. Although the former secretary of state would beat all other Republican candidates in a match-off, she ties with Carson at 47 percent.

Helping the famed doctor against Clinton is his momentum among independent voters, which has given him a 13-point lead over the former first lady, reports NBC News. Forty-seven percent of independents say they support Carson compared to 34 percent who are backing Clinton.

The poll, which surveyed 847 registered voters from Oct. 25-29, also shows that Clinton has an 8-point lead over real estate billionaire Donald Trump, 50 to 42 percent. Plus, when paired with Jeb Bush, she would best the former Florida governor by four points, 47 percent to 43 percent, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio by three points, 47 to 44.

In comparison, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders had similiar results in hypothetical matchups against Trump and Rubio. In fact, the NBC/WSJ poll shows Sanders actually outperforms Clinton when matched with Trump and Rubio by a couple of points.

Sanders has a slightly higher lead over Trump, 50 percent to 41 percent. He is also ahead of Rubio by five points, 46 percent to 41 percent compared to Clinton's three-point lead over the freshman senator.

However, although Sanders outpolls strong GOP candidates like Trump and Rubio, the survey found that only 12 percent of Democratic primary voters said they expect the self-described "Democratic Socialist" to win their party's nomination.
