Ben Carson's claims of having had a violent temper as a youth likely spelled the beginning of the end of his presidential campaign, his Republican rival Donald Trump predicted on Sunday.

Trump's comment came in reference to Carson's story that he once attempted to stab someone in his youth, only to have his knife broken when he hit a large belt buckle.

"It certainly is," the real estate tycoon told CNN's Jake Tapper on the news network's "State of the Union." "It's a lot of statements that are under fire, and I hope Ben's going to be OK with it. It's going to be interesting to see what happens -- time will tell."

Nevertheless, the former "Apprentice" star admitted that Carson "comes out great" from the scrutiny. Trump then went on to question the veracity of the retired neurosurgeon's account.

"Belt buckles really pretty much don't stop stabbing. They turn, they twist, things slide off them -- pretty lucky if that happened," he said. "It's a serious statement when you say you have a pathological disease because, if I understand it, you can't really cure it."

"Late Show" host Stephen Colbert poked fun at the whole incident on Monday, Salon noted.

"Of course, the stakes of the debate are highest for the two GOP front-runners, Donald Trump and Ben Carson," Colbert said in reference to the latest Republican encounter, which will be hosted by the Fox Business Network and will take place in Milwaukee at 9 p.m. EST Tuesday night. "Now, personally, I think the media should let this pyramid nonsense go and focus on the issues that affect us, like, did [Carson] really try to stab a dude when he was 14?"

Trump, meanwhile, on Sunday also ripped in Carson's criticism of his hosting NBC's "Saturday Night Live" comedy show, which the physician had argued was not appropriate for a presidential candidate, according to The Hill.

"Well, [Carson] would've done it [if asked]," the billionaire insisted. "Barack Obama did it. Many people did it. Many, many people running for office did it, or at a minimum they participated; last week Hillary [Clinton] did."
