GOP Attempting to Draft Mitt Romney for 2016 Presidential Race to Take on Donald Trump and Ben Carson
The GOP establishment is getting nervous now that the nomination for the Republican Presidential candidate is coming down to frontrunners Donald Trump and Ben Carson. With all of the theatrics that have been coming out of the GOP debates recently, party leaders are now attempting to draft former Governor and 2012 GOP candidate Mitt Romney for the race.
According to The Washington Post, the thought that Carson or Trump could take the nomination with the primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire so close is a little unsettling for the GOP leaders.
Trump's appeal has been with his non-stop punches thrown at his GOP rivals and private sector negotiating power, which he seems to gloat over at every turn, which includes social media. He had made some nasty comments on Twitter about Fox News host Megyn Kelly in the beginning, then later made some claims about former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush that has made for a whirlwind of publicity over the theatrics alone.
Carson's appeal has been mostly spiritual-based and, with the current maelstrom of Millenials and Latinos, that is not likely to pull any votes from the center.
So now that the race is coming down into the final stretch, what are they attempting to do to get a viable candidate on the platform to likely face the Democrat heavyweight Hillary Clinton? Well, that is where they are looking for Mitt Romney to come in and save the day.
Eric Fehrnstrom, a former adviser to Romney during the 2012 campaign, weighed in on the matter.
"The rest of the field is still wishing upon a star that Trump and Carson are going to self-destruct," Fehrnstrom told The Washington Post. He also added that "they have to be made to self-destruct. Nothing has happened at this point to dislodge Trump or Carson."
Most Republicans thought that Trump and Carson both would just fizzle out over time as they participated in the debates amongst other career politicians that would take them down in some way. But that has proven to be the farthest from the truth.
Even Carly Fiorina, another outsider from the political stage, has been more popular on the GOP debates than the seasoned politicians. Jeb Bush was early on considered the frontrunner, but he is lagging further and further behind every day.
