WWE: Charlotte's Mother Calls Use of Reid Flair's Death in WWE Raw Segment Disrespectful
The main event of this week's episode of Monday Night Raw featured the contract signing for the Divas Championship match at Survivor Series between Charlotte and Paige. It is a way to promote the title match, but it turned ugly, which got people talking about the involvement of Reid Flair, Charlotte's late younger brother, per FOX Sports.
During the contract signing, Charlotte mentioned Reid saying that she would be fighting for him, but Paige responded by telling her that her brother did not have a lot of fight in him. Reid died because of an accidental overdose last March 2013, as reported by TMZ Sports.
An autopsy revealed that the 25-year-old wrestler died due to a heroin overdose and the addition of prescription drugs clonazepam and alprazolam. Charlotte and Reid’s mother, Elizabeth, apparently was not informed that her son’s name would be involved in the storyline and she took her disappointment on Twitter.
She called the move disgusting and disrespectful, blasting the WWE creative team for being lazy and went to gaining cheap heat by mentioning her son’s death. Many fans were also turned away by the WWE’s disrespect towards Reid’s memory.
Cageside Seats also called the WWE creative team lazy for involving Reid, but also mentioned that they could have gotten permission from Charlotte and Ric Flair before allowing it on television.
TJR Wrestling added that it was not the first time that WWE used someone’s death as part of their storyline. During the feud between Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio back in 2006, Orton told Mysterio that his great friend Eddie Guerrero was in hell. It was just a few months after Guerrero died to an acute heart failure.
The latest was in 2013 when CM Punk used Paul Bearer’s name a few weeks after his death to get cheap heat during his feud with The Undertaker for WrestleMania 29.
