Philadelphia Eagles pro bowler, DeSean Jackson, was officially released from the NFL team on Friday amid rumors that the athlete has close gang affiliations in his home state of California.

The Eagles released an official Twitter statement on Friday to announce the news. "After careful consideration this offseason, Eagles decide to part ways with DeSean Jackson. The team informed him of his release today."

Jackson's former teammate and Eagles center Jason Kelce also tweeted about the shocking news. "We just made an extremely unpopular decision, but I couldn't be more excited and happy with where this organization is going!! #FlyEaglesFly. Good luck with whatever team you end up with DeseanJackson10!"

Jackson's release follows a slew of occurrences supporting the rumor that he may be involved with the noted California 'Crip' gang. Jackson has been spotted making the official Crips hand gesture a number of times, including on the NFL field and on the set of a Snoop Dogg music video.

Despite the allegations, Jackson has remained firm in his claims that he is no way affiliated with the Crips or any other gang.

The pro bowler released an official statement.

"I would like to address the misleading and unfounded reports that my release has anything to do with any affiliation that has been speculated surrounding the company I keep off of the field. I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang. I am not a gang member, and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible. I work very hard on and off the field and I am a good person with good values. I am proud of the accomplishments that I have made both on and off the field. I have worked tirelessly to give back to my community and have a positive impact on those in need. It is unfortunate that I now have to defend myself and my intentions. These reports are irresponsible and just not true."

Although Jackson currently has no official offer from any NFL team, rumors have surfaced that the NY Jets may be interested in scooping up the controversial player.

According to the NY Daily News, "Johnson admitted earlier in the week at the league meetings in Orlando that the Jets have had internal discussions about Jackson, who was being actively shopped by the Eagles at the time."

"We're looking at a number of players, including DeSean," Johnson said on Sunday. "He's a very good player, but we're looking at a number of them."
