Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Next Fight: Mexican Boxing Star Decides To Stay With Robert Garcia
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was reportedly interested in reuniting with Freddie Roach, but the Mexican boxing superstar eventually decided to stay with current trainer Robert Garcia.
Chavez and Roach were reportedly both open to a reunion after they parted ways in 2014. Following the split, Chavez trained under Joe Goossen for one fight before hiring Garcia for his showdown against Marco Reyes in July in Texas, where he ran away with a unanimous decision win.
Chavez, who has a 49-2-1 record with 32 knockout victories, will likely face World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Badou Jack in March. The 29-year-old feels that staying with Garcia is better than reuniting with Roach.
"I want to train with Robert, the last time we had camp was just five weeks, and this time we will go for two and a half months in Big Bear," Chavez told ESPN Deportes via BoxingScene. "I want to give us the opportunity to work hard together, this time the fight is harder, requires a strong camp and the best from both of us."
It remains to be seen, though, how long the Chavez-Garcia partnership will last. Roach also confirmed that he was informed about the possible reunion with his former student.
Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. also said in a recent interview that his son should hire Roach again because the Hall of Fame trainer has what it takes to help the younger Chavez reach his full potential.
"He feels that he needs to return with Freddie Roach, who gives him the potential, speed, and gives him that little extra," the elder Chavez said. "Trainer Robert Garcia is good but he lacks a little for what is needed for Julio."
Chavez Jr. Recovering Well From Hand Injury
Meanwhile, Chavez also revealed that he is recovering well from the injury he sustained during his previous fight. The Sinaloa, Mexico native injured his left hand and underwent surgery following his victory against Reyes.
Chavez said during the interview with ESPN Deportes that he has already given clearance to use his left in hand in training without any restrictions.
"The first thing that has me happy is that we got the green light to hit with my left hand, which was the one that was operated on," Chavez Jr. said. "I can hit a little, not very hard. I'm at 60 percent."
