7 Filmmakers to Look Out For At Latin American Film Market Ventana Sur
One of Latin America's biggest film markets is underway in Buenos Aires, showcasing a plethora of major filmmakers looking to get their films into distribution.
The market in question, Ventana Sur, is onto its seventh edition. According to the official website for the market, Ventana Sur has over 2,000 accredited members, including over 300 buyers.
Of course the most important aspect of the film market is the talent and this year's market features a plethora of big names and up-and-coming directors. Here are some of the directors to look out for at Ventana Sur.
1. Gabriel Ripstein
Arguably the most recognizable name on this list, Ripstein's new film, "600 miles," won big at the Berlin Film Festival and was selected as Mexico's foreign language film submission at this year's Academy Awards. His film was recently picked up Pantelion for distribution in the U.S. Ripstein is also a prominent writer and producer, penning the script for "Pulling Strings" and "Compadres."
2. Gustavo Hernandez
The Uruguayan helmer is another name to look out for. He broke out on the scene with his horror film "The Silent House," which was nominated for the Golden Camera at the Cannes Film Festival according to IMDb. That film was notable for being shot in one take and was eventually remade in the U.S. as a film called "Silent House." According to Variety, he recently announced his next project, another thriller entitled "Persomnia;" that film could mark his English-language debut film.
3. Esteban Ramirez
The Costa Rican director's new film "Presos" is headed to the Oscars yet again, marking the second time the filmmaker represents his country in the big event. According to Indiewire, he was the first Costa Rican to be selected for the honor in 2005 with his film "Caribe." The new movie follows the relationship between a young girl and a prison inmate and the repercussions it has on her life. The film opened in Costa Rica earlier this year and was the second-highest grossing local movie on its opening weekend.
4. Laura Mora
The Medellin native is making her feature film debut with "Matar a Jesus," a film about a girl who witnesses her father's assassination. Mora has been writing the script for 10 years according to Variety. While this is her first feature, she was also a co-director on the hit series "Escobar: El Patron del Mal," which was one of the most popular telenovelas in Colombia over the last decade.
5. Pedro Cabiya
The Puerto-Rican writer is making his feature film debut with the science fiction project "Uqbar." According to Metro, the film follows the story of two astronauts, Bilal and Sanaa, who battle to survive on an isolated moon that the home of a savage tribe. The film is a major co-production between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Cabiya is a well-known writer who has created such cult classics as "La Cabeza" and "Trance."
6. Gabriela Amaral Almeida
Another debutante, Almeida is showcasing her film "The Violent Animal." She has a plethora of shorts under her belt and according to Variety, is a big exponent of the horror genre.
7. Dominga Sotomayor
The Chilean director has three features under her belt. She came to prominence with the film "Thursday Till Sunday" and recently directed the Portuguese film "Aqui, em Lisboa: Episódios da Vida da Cidade." She is also an avid producer.
