These 5 Things Always Happen During Latino Family Gatherings
Family gatherings are bound to happen for the holidays and with the tightly-knit nature of Latino families, there are a lot of things you'll expect.
For every family gathering, a Latino always finds reasons to party and share a meal with loved ones. But like everything else in life, there are some pros and cons that come with it.
Here are some things a Latino can always expect during family gatherings:
Food, and Plenty of It
Every Latino family gathering has a lot of food involved. People will get a seemingly endless number of carbs, meats and sweets.
Hiplatina even said there will be plenty of food left even for someone running two hours late.
There's just a lot of everything to pick, from empanadas, ensalada de papa, tamales and flan to many more.
The only problem is you can't scarf down the food as soon as you get there. In following the hashtag #ThanksgivingWithLatinoFamilies, Remezcla gathered tweets saying hosts usually lie about start times.
You'll get hungry first because when someone in the family says that the dinner starts at 7 p.m., nobody actually eats until two hours later.
The great part is after the festivities, you can still bring part of the feast home. With that much food, it's really best to just show up with your own Tupperware.
What Clean Diet? Latino Families Don't Know That
If you're a vegan or eat gluten-free, these kinds of family gatherings won't be up to your lifestyle.
Your abuela won't cater to your dietary needs. If you want to eat vegetables, bring your own vegetables.
There's also a good chance someone will get offended if you don't eat what they brought.
"¿Ya saludaste?"
No matter how old you are, your Latina mother will always ask if you've greeted everyone at the gathering. But don't think that's a quick task you can do in a matter of minutes.
It's something that eats up a lot of your time.
There are just too many people; it will take up a lot of your time to get the greetings done. The same thing goes for goodbyes.
With all the relatives in one place, you'll need to play catch up with everyone, even the nosy tías.
Chisme, Also Lots of It
If there's one thing young Latinos have learned about growing up in their households, it's not to trust family to keep a secret.
Whispers between tías are surely going to start during gatherings, thanks to the internet and their lurking skills, said Buzzfeed.
Everyone seems to care about other people's fertility, love life, or anything else there is to know about other people. It just seems to be unavoidable.
Relatives Get Too Comfortable
In a tightly knit family setting, it just seems natural for Latinos to get in someone's room because someone's mom told them so.
There will also be tías who get too honest with the right amount of feels or alcohol.
Just like with chisme, everyone cares about your love life, asking young females if they have boyfriends ("Y Tu Novio?").
If you're above 20, this question is something you can't avoid in a Latino family gathering.
If your family members continue to treat you badly and don't give you any importance then you become a black sheep of the family. These members of the family face many traumatic conditions in their lives .
