It is no secret that Mexicans love spicy food, and Mexico is known for its wide variety of hot peppers that could burn mouths.

Mexico is famous for producing some of the most well-known chili peppers in the world, from the popular ones like the jalapeno to some of the not-so-famous such as chiltepín.

Spicy food enthusiasts often treat the world-famous jalapeno as a medium-spicy chili pepper because other Mexican variants blow it out of the Scoville scale.

If you thought jalapeno was spicy, these chili peppers in our list would leave you begging for milk to cool your mouth off.

Mexico: 5 Mexican Hot Peppers That Could Burn Your Mouth

We listed five mouth-burning hot peppers from Mexico that could make some of the most ardent chili heads break a sweat. There are no mild chilis here, only ones that are certified hot. So you won't see milder peppers like jalapeno or poblano in this list.

Serrano Peppers

Clocking in at 10,000 to 23,000 on the Scoville Scale is the serrano pepper. It is probably one of the most well-known peppers on this list. It is estimated to be around two times hotter than the jalapeno and up to 10 times spicier than the poblano. It is a mainstay of Mexican cuisine and is commonly used in day-to-day cooking.

Chiles de Arbol

This lesser-known chili pepper variant has around 15,000-30,000 SHU or Scoville Heat Units, making it hotter than the popular serrano. It is also about three times hotter than the world-renowned jalapeno.

According to Culture Trip, chiles de Arbol is likely the most attractive-looking among the Mexican hot peppers, with their long, bright red bodies and brighter green stems. Since they do not lose their color even when dried, these are often used as wreath decorations in Mexico and garnishes.

Chiltepín

This chili is so small that it is also known as the flea chili, but do not let its size fool you, as this is one of the hottest chilis in Mexico. It packs a mean punch at 50,000-100,000 SHU.

It is usually used in Sonora as medicine to cure earaches, coughs, gastritis, and even the evil eye, according to Princess Resorts. It is also way hotter than the jalapeno or the others listed above.

Manzano Chili

The Manzano chili is usually eaten fresh. It clocks in between 12,000 and 30,000 Scoville units, which is only a little bit hotter than the mighty flea chili above. As for its color, experts said that the more yellow the chili, the hotter it is. It is often used in various ways and in tacos.

Habanero

The most famous chili on the list is also the hottest. Habanero's spiciness is legendary and known across the world. So much so that when comparing the spiciness of hot peppers, the habanero serves as the baseline.

Sure, it might not be as hot as the ghost pepper, the Trinidad Scorpion, or the Carolina Reaper, but this chili has a reputation that has made it famous worldwide. At 150,000 to 575,000 SHU, it certainly is no slouch either.
