After 10 years, controversial professional wrestler CM Punk returned to the WWE at the end of Survivor Series to the shock of many. However, not everybody was happy, especially WWE World Champion Seth Rollins, who tried to confront the returning Punk, who was seen on video shared by fans as being irate and had to be restrained by several officials and talent, including Michael Cole and Sami Zayn.

It was not just Seth Rollins who seemed upset, as one of his opponents during the Survivor Series main event, Drew McIntyre, stormed out of the building soon after. However, there were reports that all ten men who participated in the main event were told before the match that CM Punk was coming out soon after the match.

The real-life Phil Brooks's return was so surprising that many on WWE's staff, including the creative team and wrestlers, knew nothing about it until he showed up backstage in Chicago, his hometown. As for the talent informed about the controversial return before the main event, Ringside News reported that they had "reactions ranging from excitement to disappointment."

"Main event talent being upset, there are numerous talent on the roster in general upset, just as there are some excited, curious and about every emotion. Talent were pulled aside before the WarGames match and told that CM Punk would be returning at the conclusion of the show," read one report when CM Punk showed up to the shock of many.

CM Punk left WWE ten years ago, and the parting was not amicable. However, he did return to AEW but left the company in a massive controversy after two backstage brawls. The Chicago native has been a controversial figure in wrestling and MMA, and his return to the WWE has left the wrestling world divided.

Seth Rollins Was Looking for CM Punk Backstage But Was Prevented by Triple H

Although there are reports that Seth Rollins being upset at the CM Punk return was only a "work" to set up a match at the Royal Rumble in January, there are also reports that Rollins was genuinely upset and was looking for Punk backstage as soon as the show was over. Before this, he had to be calmed down by his WarGames teammates Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes, as well as announcers Corey Graves and Michael Cole.

However, when Rollins arrived backstage, he was stopped and ushered away by the head of created, Triple H. Reports indicated that Rollins tried to confront CM Punk, and after Triple H led the champion away, Punk looked "confused."

Rollins has been very vocal about his opinions about Punk on social media, even calling him a "cancer" in the past, per Wrestling Inc. However, he may be forced to put his differences with the Second City Saint aside as WWE might work an angle from his outburst into a World Title feud.

How WWE Pulled Off the CM Punk Return Without Anybody Knowing

Despite the controversy surrounding it, CM Punk's return was a genuine shock to many, as many of the wrestling dirt sheets and insiders genuinely had no idea.

As it turned out, the deal did not come together until recently. Punk met with WWE's head of creative Triple H to clear the air, as the two have had a tumultuous relationship in the past. This conversation was productive, and the wrestler-turned-booker spoke openly about time-mending fences.

"A lot of time has gone by. Almost 10 years, right? And if you are the same person you were 10 years ago 10 years later, you've messed up," he said during a press conference. "Everybody grows, everybody changes. I'm a different person. He's a different person. This is a different company. And we're all on the same even starting ground."

Only a few people knew about the deal, though, and there was so much secrecy that one report from Fightful Select revealed that "Minutes before Punk appeared, a section of backstage was cleared out, but Punk was seen in plain sight. We're told that Triple H took over producing the show himself at that point, called for the copyright graphic, and then also personally called for CM Punk's music to hit."
