Rudy Giuliani Lawsuit: Judge Rebukes Former Trump Lawyer After He Doubled Down on Election Lies
A federal judge in Washington DC issued former New York City Mayor and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani after he repeated his election lies regarding two Georgia election workers who have filed a defamation lawsuit against him over those very lies.
While talking to reporters, Giuliani claimed he was telling the truth and that the two plaintiffs, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, manipulated ballots during the 2020 presidential elections. This is despite multiple courts already finding those claims to be false, with the judge already finding the former New York City mayor liable for defamation.
US District Judge Beryl Howell, who already gave her pretrial decision on Giuliani's liability, stated that the defendant's comments outside the federal courthouse in DC "could support another defamation claim." She added that his remarks regarding the two plaintiffs are "negative, quite defamatory statements about them yet again."
Giuliani already owes over $230,000 to Freeman and Moss after failing to respond to parts of their lawsuit. They are now seeking tens of millions of dollars in damages after they suffered emotional and reputational harm as well as having their safety put in danger after he singled them out and accused them of tampering with ballots in Georgia.
Because the former New York City mayor has already been found liable for defamation, this trial is only to determine how much damages he would have to pay and if there should also be additional punitive damages. The two plaintiffs showed that shortly after Giuliani and Donald Trump accused them of vote tampering without any evidence, they received constant harassment, including racist and threatening messages.
Rudy Giuliani Lawyer Questioned Over Client's Words to Media Not Being In Tune With Their Arguments
In court, Giuliani's lawyer, Joe Sibley, has been arguing that his client does not have the means to pay for damages to the two women and not denying that he has defamed the two. However, their tactics changed in front of the media as Giuliani doubled down on his election lies. This caused the judge to ask the Giuliani lawyer about this discrepancy in arguments, according to Politico.
"Was Mr. Giuliani just playing for the cameras?" asked Judge Howell. "How do you reconcile those statements ... with his statement yesterday after court that they engaged in criminal conduct?"
"I can't control everything he does, your honor," answered Sibley. "I think Mr. Giuliani is well aware of the law of defamation, your honor." Giuliani was once New York City's top prosecutor who went after the mob before becoming mayor.
Shaye Moss Says Rudy Giuliani's Lies Turned Her Life Upside Down
Plaintiff Ruby Freeman testified about her experiences after Giuliani, Trump, and their allies spread election misinformation about them and revealed that their claims turned their lives upside down, saying, "Most days I pray that God does not wake me up and I just disappear."
In her testimony, she described how she fears her son will come home from school and find her and her grandmother hanging from a tree in their yard, getting lynched by Trump supporters believing the former president's claims, which have repeatedly been found false by the courts.
She also talked about how she became a "pariah" in the election office and left the job she loved. She also testified about her son receiving harassing messages and about her getting diagnosed with major depressive disorder with acute distress because of the false election claims against them.
"How can someone with so much power go public and talk about something he has no clue about?" Moss asked as Rudy Giuliani himself sat across her.
