Gennady Golovkin Next Fight: Triple G's Camp Names Possible Foes for Early 2016
Gennady Golovkin's Camp names "Triple G's" possible foes for early 2016.
Tom Loeffler, who serves as the promoter for the World Boxing Council interim champion and mandatory challenger, is already looking into his fighter's potential opponents in spring, Boxing Scene reported. This is in response to the WBC's ruling for Golovkin and their new middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez to meet in the latter half of the year to make their showdown more exciting, another Boxing Scene report noted.
"Naturally, the winner of the Andy Lee-BJ Saunders fight is an attractive fight, it's for the WBO title. Danny Jacobs just had a very big win, he becomes an interesting opponent. So it really depends on who the opponent is and then we go for the location and we match that up with the HBO schedule," Loeffler said.
Having a bout against the winner of the World Boxing Organization title match between Lee and Saunders will help "GGG" with his goal to unify the entire middleweight division. Currently, the knockout warrior holds the International Boxing Organization, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation middleweight thrones. Bringing down the winner of the Lee-Saunders battle will make him king of four highly esteemed institutions.
On the other hand, a fight with WBA "regular" middleweight champion Jacobs, who just came out of a first-round stoppage victory against Peter Quillin on Dec. 5 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York per BoxRec, is also a good move. Crushing Jacobs when they collide will make Golovkin's reign over the specific weight class as undisputed. A separate report from Boxing Scene suggests that the sanctioning body may call for a Golovkin-Jacobs showdown in the immediate future.
Between the two, Lee is the more willing fighter to collide with the mighty Kazakh. With three world championship belts under his name, Lee sees a fight with "GGG" as a risk worthy to take.
"I want his belts. I like his belts. They look good. Holding the belt and being the champion now, it puts you in a key position... I'm a tiger for him, but he's a tiger for me too," Lee told Boxing Scene.
Yet, there's a hurdle for Golovkin's pursuit of the WBO title.
Lou DiBella, who promotes Lee and Jacobs, is inclined to let both his fighters face, if Lee successfully defends his title against Saunders on Dec. 19, Boxing Scene informed.
If Saunders win, he will not clash with "GGG," per a Boxing News 24 report.
Without a confirmation from the Lee, Jacobs or Saunders, the undefeated titleholder will have to seek other boxers ready to face him, instead.
Who else would want to trade punches with "GGG?"
