Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the director of the highly anticipated film, Dean Israelite, revealed the importance of staying true to the original concept of the series by including a diverse cast but eliminating the race-based colors.
“From the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process,” he said. “We switched all of the races around, but we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.”
The film's most recent casting was that of "Hunger Games" and "Pitch Perfect" star Elizabeth Banks as the villain Rita Repulsa. Banks, along with Lionsgate, shared the news on Twitter and revealed her excitement over the role.

The film is expected to be released on March 24, 2017.
