Final Fantasy XV becomes hottest item for Square-Enix from day one
After waiting for a decade, the delay has proven to be worth it. Square Enix recently announced that Final Fantasy XV has reached five million sales on its first day of release, making it the fastest-selling game in the 29-year old franchise.
According to Gamatsu, the amount already includes both physical and digital sales of the game, which was released for both the Xbox One and Playstation 4. The game, released on November 29, also became the highest-selling digital copy in Japan, while becoming the highest-selling physical and digital copy for the rest of Asia.
This also marks the first time for the franchise that a main-titled Final Fantasy game is released on the same day globally, which could be a factor for its success. As Screen Rant notes, releasing games globally on the same day not only makes good sales, but allows players worldwide to share the experience with others.
The positive numbers could lead for more downloadable content (DLC) for the game. So far, the Playstation Store already has several DLCs listed for the game.
Final Fantasy XV is an action-adventure game, a first for the main-titled series. It follows the story of Noctis, the last Prince of the Lucian Kingdom, as he protects the last remaining crystal against the Nifilheim Empire.
Noctis is accompanied by his bodyguard Gladiolus, his friend Prompto and Ignis, his adviser and tactician of the group. In the game, though, the player can only control Noctis; the player can, however, provide commands to the other characters, similar to Kingdom Hearts and Final Fatasy XII and XIII.
Originally part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series under the name Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the game was announced in 2006 with two other titles, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII. While FF XIII was released as intended on December 2009, even spawning its own sequels (XIII-2 and Lightning Returns), Agito XIII was released as Final Fantasy Type-0 in October 2011.
