NBA New: Mitch Kupchak, Jim Buss Out As Magic Johnson Takes Over Basketball Operations For Lakers
It seems that Jeanie Buss has had enough. On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Lakers President fired team General Manager Mitch Kupchak and her brother, executive Vice President of basketball operations Jim Buss.
With the move being, Lakers legend Magic Johnson is now officially the team's president of basketball operations. He would be taking the helm effective immediately.
"Today, I made a series of actions that I believe will help return the Lakers to the heights that are once was, a time that Dr. Jerry Buss and our fans rightly expect," Jeanie Buss said in a recent statement.
She closed it out with "... Effective immediately, Earvin "Magic" Johnson will officially be in charge of all basketball operations and will be reporting directly to me."
According to The Los Angeles Times, Kupchak was in his 30th season in the Lakers front office and had been involved with the organization in some of its prominence ever since 1981. To put it simply, he was the Lakers' GM for 17 years, the longest active streak in the NBA until today, and was also the architect of two championship teams in 2009 and 2010.
However, the Lakers have struggled to rebuild in recent years. The Lakers haven't won more than 27 games since before the 2013-14 season and have been unable to appeal towards some big-name free agents.
Just last season the Lakers won a dismal franchise-low 17 games. As of the moment, they are now 19-39 under first-year Coach Luke Walton, with 24 games remaining in the current season.
According to ESPN.com, Jeanie Buss said in her statement that the search for a new GM was well underway, and the Lakers are hoping to fill that role soon. Buss continued in her statement that "Together, Earvin, Luke, and our coming new general manager will re-establish the foundation for the next generation of Los Angeles Lakers Basketball,"
It has also been revealed that Buss has also fired John Black, the VP of communications who was also with the organization for more than 25 years. The sweeping changes came just two days before the NBA trade deadline.
