2018 McLaren 720S Review: A Lighter & Faster Car with a Top Speed of 212 mph
After buzzing around for so many months about the upcoming McLaren's new car is now finally here and like many expected, its name is 720S. The 2018 McLaren 720S is a "Phenomenal." "Blisteringly quick." "Extremely fast." These are all the words the best describe from the team who developed the 720S.
According to Road Show, the McLaren 720S put out a 720 metric horsepower, which converts to about 710 in more traditional units. The 720S also uses a 4.0-liter twin turbocharged V-8 based on 650S' V-8 architecture, but only 41 percent of the engine's parts are new with a new model of M840T.
The changes include new cylinder heads, exhausts, and a perfectly redesigned intake system, which feature a larger but lower inertia twin-scroll turbochargers. The torque output is expanded from 500-lb-ft to 568 lb-ft, which is enough to thrust to get the 720S to 60mph in just 2.8 seconds.
Moreover, Motor Trend added that the 720S is a brand-new one-piece carbon-fiber tub with an integrated roof that has a resemblance in concept to the MonoCage design that is used in the P1 hypercar. But the driving excitement is not limited, as it moves quickly in a straight line.
It has a full-width rear wing that can act as an airbrake and will move to either maximize down force or a minimize drag. The 720S is sure to be a demon in the track as its aerodynamics efficiency is more than twice as 650S. It has a Proactive Chassis Control system that will keep its shiny side up, but it can loose a bit for some drift action.
On its body, instead of using a traditional headlight, 720S features two large vents that are mounted vertically on them. The sockets that mounted the LED headlights also function as ducts to channel air to the radiators. The advantage of the design is its compact headlights that are brighter with a better spread.
The 2018 McLaren 720S will make its way beginning in May. The price is not yet official, but McLaren claims that the price will start about 5 percent higher than the outgoing 650S car.
