Emma Watson Opens Up About Gay Character In ‘Beauty And The Beast’ And Losing ‘La La Land’
It was recently reported that Disney will feature its first gay character in "Beauty and the Beast". Actress Emma Watson, who plays the role of Belle, has reacted to the decision.
According to Entertainment Weekly, director Bill Condon has admitted in an interview with Attitude magazine that "Beauty and the Beast" will have a gay moment in it. He revealed that Gaston's sidekick LeFou, played by actor Josh Gad, can be seen in "an exclusively gay moment." However, the detail is so small that it won't affect or change the main plot anyhow.
Emma Watson has agreed with the filmmakers' choice of being subtle yet noticeable with the topic. The actress also added that viewers shouldn't expect a huge gay role or a subplot in "Beauty and the Beast" because it is not there.
The actress stated that the gay moment in "Beauty and the Beast" is more like a tease. Viewers will be left wondering whether there is a gay reference or not and the ambiguity is what makes it more fun.
"I think that what's so fantastic about Josh's performance is that it's so subtle, EW quoted Watson. "It's always like, does he idolize Gaston? Is he in love with Gaston? What's the relationship there? And I think it's incredibly subtle, to be perfectly honest."
Plot spoilers reveal that the scenes in question involve LeFou flirting with Gaston, played by Luke Evans, and dancing with another male character. Reportedly, there are few theaters that are reluctant to show "Beauty and the Beast" because of the LeFou's sexuality.
Emma Watson's "Beauty and the Beast" has been the talk of the town for quite some time and the actress ditched the Oscar-winning movie "La La Land" for it. According to Vanity Fair, Watson clarified that she had to leave "La La Land" as its schedule was overlapping with "Beauty and the Beast".
Watson added that "Beauty and the Beast" demanded some heavy preparations including horse training, singing, and dancing. The actress knew she had her hands full and thus couldn't commit to "La La Land."
