Amanda Nunes' Retirement Sparks Angry Reaction from Julianna Peña
Following Amanda Nunes' retirement announcement after her victory over Irene Aldana at UFC 289, Julianna Peña expressed her dissatisfaction on social media, according to Bleacher Report.
I scared you so bad into retirement. Personally, Congratulations. Professionally, wtf was that? #UFC289
— Julianna Peña (@VenezuelanVixen) June 11, 2023
Julianna Peña and Nunes were initially set to headline the event, but Peña withdrew due to fractured ribs sustained in training.
Peña shocked UFC fans when she defeated Nunes by submission at UFC 269 in December 2021, ending Nunes' six-year winning streak. Nunes then reclaimed the UFC women's bantamweight title by defeating Peña in July 2022, setting up a highly anticipated rematch.
However, Peña's rib injury prevented the rubber match from happening, leaving spectators wondering what could have transpired. Nunes mentioned that if Peña had been her opponent that night, she wouldn't retire, as she wanted to face someone she had not fought before.
While Nunes turned 35 last month and may reconsider her retirement, she intends to step away from the UFC. UFC president Dana White expressed his desire for Nunes to stay, but for now, Nunes is determined to focus on her training facility in Florida. She aims to help other aspiring fighters achieve their MMA goals and produce future female champions.

Amanda Nunes Retires
Amanda Nunes (23-5) solidified her status as the top female fighter in the world with a dominant performance at UFC 289. In the main event, Nunes faced Irene Aldana (14-7) and emerged victorious by unanimous decision, per SI.
Throughout the fight, Nunes controlled the pace and showcased her superior skills. While Aldana landed a solid shot in the first round, she struggled to mount any significant offense. Opting for a passive approach, Aldana's strategy proved ineffective against Nunes, who delivered powerful strikes and executed six takedowns.
Following the fight, Nunes announced that she was retiring from the sport. Her decision to hang up her gloves marks the end of an era for female fighters in the UFC.
Nunes leaves a remarkable legacy as the bantamweight and featherweight champion, and her departure is a significant loss for the organization and the sport.
Amanda Nunes Leaves as the Best Female Fighter in UFC
Amanda Nunes, the reigning UFC champion in multiple weight divisions, affirmed her belief that she will always be the true champion in her weight classes, regardless of future competition, MMA Fighting noted.
Nunes expressed her satisfaction with her accomplishments and announced her retirement following her recent victory.
During the post-fight press conference, Nunes proudly stated that she would keep her belt at home and referred to any future champions as merely pretending to hold the title.
"That's going to be the fake one. It's going to be fake forever. Whoever gets the belt now, it's going to be just, like, pretending to have it. So I'm gone. I'm good. I did everything, all is taken care of in my life."
She thanked the UFC for caring for her throughout her career and stated her intention to remain involved in the sport.
Nunes leaves behind an impressive legacy in the UFC. Over her six-year reign, she defeated top contenders such as Irene Aldana, Julianna Peña, Germaine de Randamie, Holly Holm, Cris Cyborg, Valentina Shevchenko, Ronda Rousey, and Miesha Tate, among others.
With Amanda Nunes' string of victories, Nunes solidified her claim as one of the greatest female fighters in MMA history.
