Manny Pacquiao Next Fight: Chris Algieri Demanding for More Money to Face Pacman
The proposed showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri is in jeopardy as reports indicated that Algieri is asking for a bigger fight purse to face the Filipino boxing icon on November 22 in Macau.
Algieri's camp has already received an offer to face Pacquiao with reports indicating that the newly-crowned WBO light welterweight champion is set to receive a seven-digit fight purse.
However, Algieri's promoter, Jose DeGuardia, confirmed that he has not heard anything from the 30-year-old welterweight's camp. He added that he has not been informed about any demand for a bigger purse, but DeGuardia admitted that they will likely lose the offer if Algieri fails to decide in the next several days.
"It's the opportunity of a lifetime," DeGuardia said via The New York Daily News. "I need to know his answer. It's been a week. No one has told me anything about needing more money. Hopefully he comes to his senses but if I don't hear anything we'll likely lose the offer."
Newsday reported that Algieri is indeed asking for more money. The unbeaten champion said that he deserves a bigger paycheck -- now that he is a champion, who has a 20-0 record.
"I took a calculated risk with the Ruslan fight and took short money because of that reason. I was really unknown at that point. I'm not an unknown anymore," Algieri said. "If we're going to make this fight happen, I value myself and my health very highly and what I've been doing for the past 20 years. I just want what I deserve."
DeGuardia said that the financial details of the fight contract is already a good one for Algieri, considering the fact that he just received a career-best $100,000 payday in his recent showdown with former WBO junior welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov.
DeGuardia admitted that he is disappointed with Algieri, saying that the Huntington, New York native might be getting improper advice from his handlers.
"I'm just very surprised and disappointed by what's going on," DeGuardia said. "I know what a deal is worth and this is a good deal. I think he's getting advice from people who aren't in the business and they're not giving him good advice. This deal is a no-brainer. I have to think he's going to come to his senses eventually."
