According to multiple sources, the Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo. The deal is for seven years, and it is worth up to $72 million.

Major League Baseball has always been the leading professional sports league among Latin American athletes in the United States. Territories such as the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico and many others have been a terrific opportunity for Latinos to showcase their talents and skills.

Castillo is 27 years old. Although not very tall at 5-foot-9, he is an excellent outfielder. In 2008, Castillo joined the Ciego de ávila Tigres. He had a terrific rookie year batting .349 during his 43 at bats. His 2010 season saw a huge increase in power. Castillo hit 22 home runs and had a .553 slugging percentage. During his five years at Ciego de ávila, Castillo batted an eye popping .319 at the plate.

Just last week, the Red Sox signed seven players from countries that include Venezuela, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and even Italy.

Because of the obvious financial reasons and more suitable living conditions in the United States, the sports is seeing many baseball players defect from Cuba in recent years. Chicago White Sox Rookie Jose Abreu defected from Cuba to the Dominican Republic in 2013. Abreu ranks second in all of Major League Baseball with 33 home runs so far this season.

Yasiel Puig is one of MLB's most well-known stars. He defected to Mexico before playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers. His dangerous story is among one of the craziest and unique in sports. Two-time home run derby champion Yoenis Céspedes is another success story. Céspedes defected from Cuba to the Dominican Republic in 2011 with his family. He is now with the Boston Red Sox.

Castillo gained residency in Haiti, granting him the ability to be signed in MLB.

Castillo's contract of $72 million is the largest amount ever given to a free-agent amateur. Castillo isn't viewed as the next Albert Pujols, but his constancy is great. He's a line drive hitter and has drawn comparisons to the legendary Derek Jeter. Castillo also has tremendous speed and athleticism. In his last three seasons for the Tigres, he had 74 stolen bases.

Rusney Castillo has also played for the Cuban National Team. According to the "Havana Times," Castillo was suspended last year for "violation of the code of ethics of revolutionary baseball." Last season his attempt at fleeing Cuba resulted in the suspension.

The Red Sox are having an extremely disappointing season and find themselves in last place in the American League East. Their hopes of repeating don't look to be very high, but with the addition of Castillo, the future looks bright.

Castillo will join the Red Sox this season.
