NFL Standings: Philadelphia Eagles Take Control of NFC East With Convincing Win Over Dallas Cowboys
The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day Thursday, 33-10, and with that win, the Eagles are now in sole possession of first place in the NFC East with a 9-3 record.
The Cowboys are in second place with an 8-4 record.
The Eagles have now won four of their last five games and a have a perfect 3-0 divisional record. The only losses for the Eagles this season are to the San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers. The Eagles dismantled the Cowboys from the opening kickoff much in part to running back LeSean McCoy.
The Eagles are now 6-0 all-time when playing on Thanksgiving.
Even though Nick Foles is still out with a collarbone injury, quarterback Mark Sanchez is playing well under head coach Chip Kelly. Against the Cowboys, Sanchez had one of the best games of his career completing nearly 70 percent of his passes and finished with a 102.2 passer rating. The Eagles' offensive line was phenomenal, allowing Sanchez plenty of time to throw all game.
Both DeMarco Murray and McCoy had at least 20 carries, but Murray struggled with just 73 yards while McCoy had 159 yards rushing.
Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin is becoming an elite player in this league. Maclin had 108 receiving yards against the Cowboys, and has been playing better than Dez Bryant this season. Maclin now has 71 catches, 1,088 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
As for the Cowboys, it was a disappointing game, but not the end.
It appears as if the Cowboys play better away from Jerry Jones's billion-dollar stadium. The Cowboys are just 3-4 at home this season, but 5-0 on the road. The Cowboys are the only remaining undefeated road team in the NFL. Notable road wins for the Cowboys this season include victories against the Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints. It may sound crazy, but the Cowboys may be better off as a wild card team instead of a division winner so they don't "have to" play at home, like the 2010-11 Green Bay Packers.
One issue for the Cowboys this season could be divisional play. Last season, the Cowboys dominated the NFC East by going 5-1 against division opponents. So far this season, the Cowboys are 2-2 against NFC East teams.
With the New York Giants and Washington Redskins struggling, the NFC East comes down to the Eagles and Cowboys.
It's still unknown whether or not Foles will return this regular season. We saw Aaron Rodgers return last season from a similar collarbone injury, and he played very well. If Sanchez continues to play well under Kelly's system, we could be looking at a quarterback controversy.
The Eagles will play the Seahawks next week at home, while the Cowboys play the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The Eagles have the much tougher opponent, but if they can win, a chance at getting the No. 1 seed in the NFC is a possibility. The Cardinals also have nine wins, but backup quarterback Drew Stanton leaves doubt in Arizona.
The Cowboys and Eagles will play each other again in Week 15 on Dec. 14 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
