Michael Brown Memorial Run: Two Men Run 540 Miles in Memory of Slain Teen
Two men ran 540 miles from Atlanta to Ferguson in memory of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was killed by former police officer Darren Wilson.
Atlanta residents Londrelle Hall and Ray Mills traveled on foot to Ferguson for 20 days, reaching the memorial site of Michael Brown by Sunday, Nov. 23.
The men ran for an organization that raises awareness about racial injustice and police brutality. Run for Justice was created by Hall who worked with Mills to raise money to help Brown's family and wrongfully arrested protesters with legal and court fees.
Twenty-eight-year-old Hall and Mills, 29, also helped to organize a "Million Man March" in Missouri.
Hall and Mills approached the site where Michael was shot by police officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9 and were overcome by emotions.
"It hurts my heart that our youth think that just because they're black and young they could be killed in the street at the hands of somebody that was supposed to protect them," Hall told The Huffington Post.
"After Michael Brown, I felt compelled to change the face of the young black man, to show you don't always have to be gunned down."
Both men met with local protesters in St. Louis to walk the last mile and chronicled their journey through social media using the hashtag #RunForJustice.
"We pretty much traveled Michael Brown's last steps, so we really had to put ourselves in his shoes," Hall said. "I was re-living his last moments. I felt remorse. It was a very sad moment, one of the saddest moments in my life."
Police officer Darren Wilson was not indicted for killing Michael Brown although protests went on for weeks seeking his arrest. After a grand jury decision, Wilson resigned.
In a resignation letter released Saturday, he said, "It was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other police officers and the community are of paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal."
Some protesters continued their march after the decision and resignation.
