New York Giants 2015 NFL Free Agents: Will Team Re-Sign Jason Pierre-Paul, Antrel Rolle & Larry Donnell?
The New York Giants are entering what appears to be the final chapter in the Tom Coughlin era.
After a disappointing 6-10 season, the Giants have now missed the playoffs five of the last six years. Still, this coaching staff and quarterback have proven they can win together after winning two Super Bowls, in 2007 and 2011.
But before the Giants look forward to next season or the NFL Draft, they have to first examine their free agents. The NFL free agent and trading period begins on March 10 at 4 p.m. EST.
Obviously the biggest name the Giants have to make a decision on is defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. Pierre-Paul is just 26 years old and he has accumulated 42 sacks since being drafted by Big Blue in 2010. Pierre-Paul has been critical for the Giants' pass rush helping them win a Super Bowl.
Many NFL experts believe the Giants could franchise tag Pierre-Paul, but that wouldn't benefit the team long term. One possibility for the Giants is to pursue free agent Ndamukong Suh. Suh is a tackle, not an end, but he can have the same impact as Pierre-Paul at the line of scrimmage.
Another name the Giants have to keep an eye on is tight end Larry Donnell. Donnell had a breakout season with 623 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Fortunately for the Giants, they have exclusive rights for Donnell's contract. Most likely they will retain him.
The Giants' secondary also has some questions. Antrel Rolle, Quintin Demps and Stevie Brown are all unrestricted free agents as is cornerback Walter Thurmond. Rolle has been a valuable player with the Giants, helping them win one Super Bowl, playing in almost every game and providing a lot of key tackles. Rolle has missed just one game in the last seven seasons.
Walter Thurmond could be a valuable re-signing for the right price. Thurmond previously played with the Seattle Seahawks but last year was placed on injured reserve missing almost the entire season.
Wide receiver Kevin Ogletree is also an unrestricted free agent. Ogletree is still just 27 years old, and Victor Cruz is coming off a terrible injury, but many people think the Giants will not re-sign Ogletree. With the emergence of rookie wide out Odell Beckham Jr., the Giants have other issues to focus on.
