Jennifer Lopez Sued for Provocative Performance in Morocco, May Face Jail Time
Jennifer Lopez is being sued by an educational group in Morocco for what it is describing as her overtly sexualized performance at the televised Mawazine World Rhythms International Music Festival on Friday, May 29, TMZ reports.
The educational group claims Lopez's televised performance "disturbed public order and tarnished women's honor and respect."
If Lopez is convicted, she faces one month to two years in prison, according to TMZ.
In addition to the educational group, Moroccan citizens and Minister of Communication Mustafa Khalfi are also speaking out against Lopez's performance, FOX News reports.
Moroccan citizens are describing Lopez as being too "scantily" dressed and claim that Lopez was making too many "suggestive poses" for Moroccan TV during her concert.
Khalifi also sent out a disapproving tweet about Lopez's performance.
BBC reports that Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane has also ordered an investigation into the Moroccan televised broadcast of Lopez's concert.
Benkirane is criticizing the 2M public TV network for allowing Lopez's concert to be aired on television and describe the network's actions as "serious delinquency."
Lopez has yet to respond publicly to the backlash she's received from the Moroccan people and government.
But prior to her performance, she appeared at an Associated Press press conference in Morocco and shared how excited she was to be performing for the Moroccan people, says the Daily Express.
"I'm excited for everyone to see my whole show and experience a Moroccan audience for the first time that way," she said.
In addition to Lopez, Pharrell Williams, Sting, Maroon 5, Usher, Akon and several Arab and African acts are also scheduled to perform at the 10-day festival in Morocco.
TMZ adds that this isn't the first time Lopez has performed in Morocco. However, it is the first time that her performance has been televised and criticized.
