"Empire" Season 2 is right around the corner as fans are waiting to see what will happen to the Lyon family and their entire music company.

There is a possibility that Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) will have a new love interest for Season 2, TVLine notes.

Marisa Tomei plays lesbian venture capitalist Mimi Whiteman in "Empire" Season 2 and just might be a love interest for Cookie. Speculation is that they will start a relationship being that Cookie has spent 17 years in prison and the pair seems to be cozying up to each other.

Showrunner Ilene Chaiken tells TVLine that producers are working on developing characters more for the next season.

"The only thing that I sometimes felt while I was watching the show -- and clearly sometimes the audience felt it too -- is not so much that we burned through a story too quickly, but that we sometimes didn't honor the evolution of character in a way that we wanted to, because we were trying to get a story moment," Chaiken reveals.

Fox 5's "Game On" special confirmed that fans will see more character development within the Lyon family. Viewers will learn more about Lucious Lyon's (Terrence Howard) life before Empire and how he reacted while Cookie was in jail.

Lucious is behind bars at that start of Season 2 and is working on a plan to get out.

"What Lucious Lyon does in prison is interesting, and what he takes out of prison makes him more Lucious than ever," Chaiken reveals. "It brings him closer to the streets, back to his roots. He's angrier, more ferocious and more powerful than he was before."

Meanwhile, Ne-Yo has been added to the list of producers for Empire's music back in May, according to Billboard. Ne-Yo and Pitbull co-wrote "No Doubt About It" by Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) while Pitbull will make a guest star appearance for one episode.

"Empire" returns to Fox on Sept. 23 for Season 3.
