Argentina vs. Chile Copa America 2016 Predictions, Preview, Streaming Info As Lionel Messi Looks To Make His International Mark
Argentina and Chile face off in a monumental game to kick off Group D of the Copa America 2016 on Monday.
Can Argentina get revenge?
This is the rematch between the two sides that contested the final last summer. That game of course ended with Lionel Messi holding his head as he watched his team mates fumble penalties, handing Chile its first ever tournament win of all time.
For Argentina that match was yet another disappointment as the team lost the year before against Germany in the World Cup final.
Los Albicelestes will obviously be looking to make this third time a charm, but they face a steep challenge - fatigue. These players have all contested tremendous amounts of games throughout the years without much rest and this opening game promises to be a rough one from the outset. Messi has already been struggling with injury and this could be the tournament that figuratively breaks his back. His overall play for Barcelona took a hit this year, signaling the start of his decline.
This game should feature excitement as Argentina looks to get back at Chile at the off. It is not hard to remember teams getting vengeance against other finalists the next time they face off in a major tournament. Spain saw a 5-1 whipping from the Dutch in their World Cup rematch in 2014 and Germany got some revenge on Brazil after losing 2-0 in the 2002 final in their World Cup rematch.
Can Argentina pull off a similar bit of revenge?
This is the same Chile side that won it all last year, but you have to wonder if the home field advantage was the extra gear the team needed to make it all the way. They will not have that advantage this year so this team could be up for a letdown.
History favors Argentina by a lot
Chile's record against Argentina all-time is horrendous with the Albiceleste owning 58 wins, 22 draws and only seven defeats against Chile. Chile of course has on win in the last four, but the overall picture is an ugly one.
Player to Watch
Lionel Messi is the player of the tournament to watch, especially if healthy. This is likely his best chance to win something with Argentina as his decline sets in and his powers diminish. He will be a man on a mission.
Prediction
Argentina will be out for blood and will destroy Chile in another major landslide. This one will end 5-0 with Messi scoring one goal and Sergio Aguero adding a hat trick.
Schedule and Streaming Info
The game starts at 10 p.m. EDT. It can be viewed on Fox Sports 1 or Univision. Those with a FuboTV subscription or Fox Soccer 2 Go subscription can watch the game online.
