'Westworld' Season 2 Spoilers: Hosts to redefine evolution beyond human sentience; Showrunners tease what's next
"Westworld" ended with a bang, literally. After solving the puzzle of what is at the center of the maze, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) shot Ford (Sir Anthony Hopkins) in the head during his retirement speech. As the series would not be back for Season 2 until 2018, viewers are left hanging about the next step of the sentient hosts.
For the optimistic fans who are hoping that Ford is still alive, he's dead. Speaking with Empire Online, "Westworld" executive producers and creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy said that they have intended to kill Ford at the start in order to kick-off the road to freedom of the hosts.
"We've seen before, it's his voice that can control them, he has such complete control of these creatures, that kind of stepping out of that picture is one of the last things that he needs to do to complete his role in ushering them into existence," said Joy. It can be noticed that Arnold's manner of death is accidentally similar to that of Ford's.
As the creators of the hosts are finally obliterated, how would the hosts continue? As Joy divulged, the showrunners of "Westworld" is not done yet with the evolution of the hosts, which as she teased would take a different trajectory from human evolution.
"One of the things that I'm wary of is defining the trajectory of the hosts' evolution from a kind of anthropomorphic vantage point. We tend to think of A.I. right now, or a lot of people do, as 'Maybe one day, A.I will be sentient,' and we define sentient as being like us. "
"I think that there might be a kind of different metric; a different course of evolution ... They (hosts) might be heading on an entirely different trajectory. That's kind of what I want to explore, the ways in which human evolution is not the appropriate benchmark for these creatures," ended Joy.
As for the rebellion that is yet to come, Nolan teased viewers to "stay tuned" for "Westworld Season 2" which might be a long wait as the show will not follow the year-on-year tradition of television, reported Variety. Joy, however, gave an update on the progress of the production.
"We've started working on scripts and outlines. It's looking good. It's looking very ambitious. There are some surprises and bits of it that you won't see coming," offered Joy.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates on "Westworld Season 2."
