The Los Angeles Dodgers have been heavily criticized for a photo op that was revealed on their team's Twitter page. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez was shown with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto in Mexico City, Mexico.

The photo (shown above) displays Gonzalez giving Peña Nieto a Dodgers jersey with the name "Peña Nieto" on the back of it. Los Angeles is home to one of the largest Hispanic populations in the United States today at more than 48 percent. Gonzalez is of Mexican descent.

Obviously a nonviolent action, but many Mexican-Americans and Dodgers fans have taken offense to it. The controversy and negative reception stems from the current situation in Iguala, Mexico, involving missing teachers.

As our own Rebecca Myles explains, 43 students were traveling to Iguala in three separate buses to raise money. At some point, police officers opened fire on the students, killing as many as six people and injuring another 25 in the process. For whatever reason, at least 43 of the students were later kidnapped.

Nationwide protests have been taking place across the country of Mexico, and many political protests have taken place in the United States as well.

For President Peña Nieto, he has been under a lot of scrutiny since the tragic incident. The 43 students have not yet been pronounced dead, but many feel as if it's time for Peña Nieto to resign from office. Gonzalez has been receiving his fair share of criticism, as well.

In the United States, two very public killings have received a lot of national notoriety lately. The death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner's death in Staten Island, New York, have had athletes voice their opinion multiple times.

Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant and Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose have both worn shirts that read, "I can't breathe." LeBron James has also worn the same shirt, as well as took a previous stance against the disgraced Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling by having his team put on their jerseys in the middle of the court before a playoff game.

Many Major League Baseball fans (particularly Dodgers fans) thought this would be a good chance to bring more attention to the issues in Mexico, mainly the missing students. Gonzalez has been a fan favorite in Los Angeles having led the National League in runs batted in last season with 116. Gonzalez also won a Golden Glove Award last season.

Gonzalez was being honored with the 2014 Premio Nacional de Deportes award. Gonzalez has previously represented Mexico in three World Baseball Classics, 2006, 2009 and 2013. Having chosen to represent Mexico several times and donate multiple generous contributions to Tijuana, it's obvious Gonzalez still loves his country of Mexico.

The Dodgers have not issued a statement or removed the tweet.
