During a recent interview, "No Doubt" lead vocalist Gwen Stefani opened up about the reason why she and Gavin Rossdale, her husband, allow their three sons to manicure and paint their nails.

Stefani explained to PrideSource that her uniqueness and tendencies to primp and pamper herself has "rubbed off" on her children, therefore she allows them to paint her nails like she does.

"It's one of those things where, it's not like I don't think about it, but they're used to being around me, and I'm always doing my hair, makeup, nails," the "The Voice" judge explained. "It's just normal for them. What I like to say is that being unique and original is what makes me happy, and I think that rubs off on them."

In addition to nail painting being a "normal" habit for the boys, Stefani also explained this ensures her sons' nails are kept clean and well groomed.

When it is time to paint her sons' nails, Stefani makes sure to ask the boys whether or not they are comfortable attending school this way.

"My sons did nails just the other day, and the only reason was because their nails were so disgusting!" she admitted. "We really played 'Salon' and we did tiger stripe nails. I said to Kingston, 'Are you sure you wanna do pink, because you're gonna go to school tomorrow? Are you sure you're not gonna be embarrassed?' He said, 'No, I don't care. It's a cool color.'"

While she is still takes precaution in order to ensure that her sons are comfortable with their nails, Stefani admitted she admires her sons' fearless attitudes to go against the norm.

"It's really important more than anything else to not be talked into something, to stand your ground and to be able to be strong about what you feel," she shared. "I don't want them to try to be like everyone else, and at that age, everybody just wants to have the same shoes everybody else has, and I don't really like that. If they do want to, I'll support that as well. You just want them to be happy. It's a short life and it goes by so quick."

Another celebrity couple that permits freedom of expression in their child's appearance is Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Last month, Jolie and Pitt's daughter Shiloh -- who prefers being called John -- stepped out on the red carpet looking more masculine with a short haircut and boy's tuxedo.

Though John's recent red carpet appearance proved to be her most controversial look to date, both Jolie and Pitt have always remained vocal about supporting their child's desire to dress like a boy. In a past interview with the Daily Mail, Jolie defended John's choice of style.

"Some kids wear capes and want to be Superman, and she wants to be like her brothers. It's who she is. It's been a surprise to us and it's really interesting, but she's so much more than that -- she's funny, and sweet and pretty," she said.
