Disney ‘Frozen 2' Movie Sequel, Cast & Release Date Rumors: New Lawsuit Claims Movie's Plot Stolen From Children's Book 'The Snow Princess'
The creator of "Frozen," one of Disney's biggest hits, may be facing a legal issue.
A lawsuit by an author claims "Frozen" copied plot elements from her story about a snow princess, Detroit News reports. Kuwaiti author Muneefa Abdullah filed a copyright infringement lawsuit Monday in Detroit's federal court alleging that "Frozen" was based on her children's story, "The Snow Princess."
She says the movie copied plot elements including characters from her story such as Elsa, who has the ability to turn people into ice.
"She wants money. She's not looking to harm anybody," Abdullah's lawyer, Mohamed Zaher, said. "She believes 'Frozen' was her idea and it was stolen."
Disney's 2013 "Frozen" grossed more than $1.27 million worldwide. Toys and books created from the film made millions more including being last year's hottest holiday toys for children and selling out in most stores. It has previously been reported that "Frozen" screenwriter and co-director Jennifer Lee got her inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen's story "The Snow Queen." But Abdullah says it came from her children's story.
Abdullah's "The Snow Princess" was published in 2007 by Trafford Publishing as a part of the compilation "New Fairy Tales."
According to the lawsuit, the story was later picked up by Random House Publishing and Abdullah worked there for eight years.
Zaher claims that, "Lee's history with Random House Publishing, as well as the fact that 'New Fairy Tales' has been available for sale through websites such as Amazon beginning since 2007, gave Lee reasonable opportunities to observe 'New Fairy Tales' and 'The Snow Princess' before she began screenwritng 'Frozen' in 2012."
Abdullah's lawyer says she is a "multimillion dollar lady' who is popular in the Middle East.
According to Time magazine, Disney has yet to comment about the lawsuit.
Andersen's "The Snow Queen" was written in the mid-19th Century and was already credited as inspiration behind "Frozen."
All three stories are about a snow princess or queen that has the power to turn people into ice.
