Amanda Bynes has returned to school at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

The 29-year-old actress began taking class at the Los Angeles institution on Thursday, her parents' lawyer Tamar Arminak told E! News. A security guard will be by her side while on school grounds.

"We are all so proud of her and can't wait to see her amazing designs on the runway someday," the Bynes' attorney said.

Bynes first enrolled to take courses at FIDM's Orange County, California campus in January 2014. She originally entered the program intending to be a fashion design major, but later switched to merchandise product development, a source told E!

While attending FIDM, a source said, Bynes was "a great student who always participated and really cared about her classes," and that she "really fit in and loves her school."

The actress was supposedly enrolled in class in July 2014, but then decided to take a break from her studies during that summer. In the fall of that year, she had returned to New York and even tweeted about possibly transferring to "NYU or Columbia." However, these plans fell through when she returned to the West Coast in October and spent time in psychiatric hold at a treatment facility.

In November, after she was released from the treatment facility, Bynes announced she had been diagnosed as bipolar and manic depressive. The star's mother Lynn was then made her temporary conservator, though Bynes said she hoped to get "unconserved." The actress has been working to make that happen by taking her medication regularly and seeing her psychologist and psychiatrist weekly.

Bynes sent out a tweet near the end of 2014 saying that she was hoping to transfer to University of Southern California. Around Christmas, she seemed to be making progress, posting a Christmas Day selfie.

By February 2015 the actress' overall mental health seemed to be improving, with one source reporting, "[She is] doing really great and is very healthy. She is focusing on reading, yoga and reconnecting with her family . . She is trying to live a more balanced life."

Bynes is a former child star, known for her appearances on "All That" and "The Amanda Show."
